Supporting Senior Horses Through Winter

January has arrived with a blast of cold followed by torrential rain. Fields are like a muddy ice rink and we are all wondering when spring will FINALLY arrive.

Winter is tough for all of us, but especially those looking after senior horses. We face the dilemma of turning horses out in slippery cold conditions, or keeping them in a dry stable for longer periods which is likely to result in them getting very stiff.

Generally the oldies aren't looking their best at this time of year, coats look dull and cold wet weather can exacerbate stiffness. With younger horses its easier to provide a bit less turnout and keep them in ridden work, this isn't so easy with older horses.

Massage, mobilisation and stability exercises can help support our older horses through winter months. We can increase blood flow, keep range of movement through their joints and use passive movements to engage the core stabilising muscles. I'm a huge advocate of in-hand work and poles for horses but it's especially useful at this time of year with horses that are retired /semi retired. There are lots of techniques we can use to help them maintain strength and mobility.

If you would like to know more about how I can support you manage your older horses, please get in touch.
